Disaster Recovery

Disaster recovery is the policies and procedures that are developed to return a business to normal operation after a disaster occurs; this includes regaining access to data and communications (internet, emails etc).

To increase the opportunity for a successful recovery, a well-established and tested disaster recovery plan must be developed.
A disaster recovery plan should also include plans for dealing with the unexpected loss of communications, data and personnel. Disaster recovery planning is part of a larger process known as business continuity planning.

The most common strategies used in a disaster recovery plan for data protection include the following:

  • Backups made to tape and sent off-site
  • Backups made to disk on-site and automatically copied to off-site storage
  • Replication of data to an off-site location
